The sheriff's page says the inmate search is meant to promote public safety and provide selected offender information consistent with the spirit and intent of the North Carolina Public Records Act. It also warns that information changes quickly and that certain offenders may be excluded from the website at agency discretion.

The roster is strongest for current Halifax County Detention Center custody. It is not a full criminal-history report, a statewide prison index, or a complete court file. The released-inmate function has an important local limit: the sheriff landing page says released searches are limited to the previous 24-hour time frame. When that window has passed, the practical fallback is to call the jail, request a sheriff record, or search court and corrections systems based on the reason for the inquiry.

Use the Halifax County Inmate Roster

The roster gives three public search routes: Inmates, Charges, and Days. The Inmates tab is the best first path when the name is known. Charges can help when a family member heard the alleged offense but not the exact spelling of a name. Days can help locate recent bookings when a person was arrested recently and the name search is uncertain.

2. Enter at least the first part of the person's name, or choose View all inmates and filter the grid.
3. Use the Charges tab if the charge description is the only known fact.
4. Use the Days search for a recent booking window and adjust the number if needed.
5. Click the full-name link in the grid to open the inmate profile.
6. Call 252-583-3081 if charge, bond, or custody information is missing or unclear.

The grid is useful before opening a profile because it exposes filter rows, sortable columns, and admit-date searching.

Halifax County Roster Search Fields

The Halifax roster is more flexible than a plain last-name lookup. The research found autocomplete behavior in both the inmate-name and charge-description fields, beginning after two characters. The direct app also offers links to view all inmates and all charges, which helps when spelling or charge wording is not exact.

Halifax County Inmate Profile Fields

A full inmate profile separates the person-level intake data from charge and court rows. A sample profile inspected during research showed a public mugshot, demographic fields, admit date and time, confining agency, and a charge table. It did not show a booking number, housing unit, projected release date, warrant number, magistrate name, or full date of birth in the public view.

Halifax County Inmate Access Channels

When the online roster does not answer the question, use the access chain documented in the research. The jail FAQ says charge and bond information can be obtained by calling 252-583-3081 and providing the inmate's full name. Release requirements are routed to the Halifax Magistrate's Office at 252-593-3019 or a bail bondsman. Attorney-representation questions may go to the jail or the Clerk of Superior Court at 252-593-3000.

In-person questions route to the Sheriff's Office and Detention Center at 355 Ferrell Lane in Halifax, but the source set did not publish separate lobby records hours. Court records are a separate channel. The Judicial Branch public-record request page directs court searches to the portal, mail, in-person, or public-record request options, while county and city documents should be requested from the county or city office that keeps them.

County, State, and Federal Inmates

The Halifax County roster covers local confinement. NCDAC's public-records page specifically says prison records do not include local, county, or city jail records. That boundary is important because Roanoke River Correctional Institution sits in Halifax County but is a state prison. State prisoners are searched through NCDAC, not the Halifax jail roster.

Federal and immigration custody are separate again. The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator searches by BOP register number, DCDC number, FBI number, INS number, or name. The ICE Online Detainee Locator System searches immigration custody by A-number or biographical information. A local jail profile may show some holds or agencies if listed in the charge table, but the inspected Halifax profile did not show a separate ICE-hold field.

Halifax County Jail Facilities

The county has one primary local jail facility in the resolved map, plus one state prison physically inside Halifax County. The local jail profile and the state prison profile should be read separately because operator, custody type, mail, visitation, and lookup system all differ.

Booking Process in Halifax County

After arrest or court commitment, the person is transported to magistrate or jail processing depending on the circumstances. Intake creates or updates the custody record. Detention staff do not relay personal messages. Use mail for messages, and remember that unauthorized items are destroyed under the published mail and property rules.

The public profile should be read as a custody snapshot, not a final case outcome. A charge row can show a court date and bond while the prosecutor later amends, reduces, or dismisses the case in court. For that reason, a roster profile is often the first record to check after arrest, while NC eCourts and the Clerk of Superior Court remain the better sources for disposition and hearing history.

Halifax County Visitation Rules

The jail uses video visitation only. There is no face-to-face public visitation. The sheriff's visitation page and video visitation instructions route users through HomeWAV, with advance scheduling and visitor rules. Visits can be monitored and recorded, and dress-code violations, disorderly conduct, intoxication, nudity, sexual conduct, or no-contact orders can block a visit.

Halifax County Inmate Mail and Money

Mail for inmates goes to the inmate name at Post Office Box 36, Halifax, NC 27839, with a visible return name and address. Books and reading materials must come from a publisher, bookstore, or retail vendor, and books must be soft cover. Inmates may receive up to five photos no larger than 5x7 if the contents meet jail rules. Greeting cards are photocopied, and the original goes into property.
